I too am building a Softrock RXTX to use with linux. For the moment though, I've chosen to dual boot my desktop and follow the original windows instructions. Thanks for breaking the ice on this, as I'll be doing the same thing as soon as my build is done.

Eventually I'll want to tie together my softrock and a copy of pskmail on my arm based server.

Not a ham, but have known a few, and am still interested in radio. My budget precludes setting up a station, but I have a couple of decent analog trunking scanners, and these were my window into events as they unfolded Apr. 27, before and after the power went out. I have a homebrew h/w dipole inside my house [125mhz air band] and a UPS dedicated to scanner power, and was able to monitor quite a variety of traffic that day and through the night, valley wide, including the rescue of the gentleman with the heart ailment. Kudos to you guys for all your efforts. Timely spotter reports saved me from having to huddle in the closet all night. Thanks for the NARA link, was able to add two new freqs to my hams bank. Let's hope we don't do this again for at least another 37 years.

Very well stated recap here Steve... and Thanks again for your contributions.

For those readers that were not here to listen, I was operating my portable ham radio station and helping coordinate information and resources at the medical field clinic just south of Anderson Hills, our 'Ground Zero' . . . You can see a few brief blog posts and links to my photo galleries via http://wb5rmg.wordpress.com . A comprehensive description from that position will be forthcoming. Steve has explained a lot of things here that I won't have to repeat in my postings. Thanks for that .. /;^)
